The Maad Code works introduce the Maadphabet, a script inspired by the West African Maad fruit seeds. A Wolof proverb, etched into glass in Wolof, French, and English, reimagines language beyond colonial scripts. Viewers are invited to create their own narratives through titles like “Origins,” “God’s Eye,” and “The Great Escape,” a moment to hold space for the layers within all of us. Each work’s backing features seeds, peels, oyster shells, and fragmented faces, reflecting Senegalese cuisine, trade histories, queerness, and the act of breaking bread. “Origins” is the index or key for the series, representing each character and the individual ingredient found throughout.
